Background:
John Snow, Inc. (JSI) is a public health management firm, headquartered in the United States, dedicated
to improving the health of individuals and communities throughout the world. JSI has been implementing
public health work in Ethiopia for over 25 years.
JSI is implementing the five-year Digital Health Activity in Ethiopia, which is funded by the United
States Agency for International Development (USAID). The purpose of this Activity is to support the
Government of Ethiopia (GOE) to improve the quality of health services and create a sustainable health
care system through the use of data for decision making, as well as to provide similar services to other
countries in Africa or to respond to a crisis in Ethiopia (as needed). The primary objectives of the Activity
are to
1) support information technology systems and data repository at all levels;
2) build a culture of data use; and
3) improve capacity and governance of MOH health information systems management.
The Biomedical Engineer is a member of the help desk team designated to support health facilities
troubleshoot and maintain Medical Equipments that they are using. He/she supports the health facilities in
undergoing periodic maintenance and troubleshooting any issues they encounter with Medical
Equipments.
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities of the Biomedical Engineer will include, but is not limited to the following:
Respond to incoming calls to the help desk from health facilities, record, organize,
analyze and generate reports.
Ensure if the device reported is under warranty; if so work with stakeholders and the
agent to get the equipment maintained.
 
Understand the issue reported by the health facility and troubleshoot equipment
malfunctions over the phone.
Guide health facilities over the phone with installation of medical equipments
Receive reports through the help desk hotline and log the issue on the help desk system
for health facilities that do not have access to the system.
Escalate issues that were not resolved at the helpdesk to the appropriate bio medical
engineer at regional or zonal level.
Follow up and make sure all issues are solved by working closely with all public and
private stakeholders.
Routinely follow up with biomedical engineers and operators at health facilities and
ensure preventive equipment maintenance are performed based on the manufacturer
manual.
Regularly follow up the help desk dashboard and ensure equipment malfunctions are
properly reported.
Support health facilities to conduct and manage medical device inventory management
Support and participate on MoH-PMED on maintenance campaign facilitation and
management
Develop specification for medical devices and spare parts
Support and follow health facilities to implement Medical Equipment Management
information System (MEMiS).
Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Applicants for this position should possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering is required
3 years and above of experience in maintenance of medical equipments
Previous hospital imaging/laboratory, Covid19 and oxygen therapy medical equipment
maintenance and management experience is an asset.
 
Able to conduct troubleshooting medical device failure and provide technical advise
remotely.
Good knowledge of commonly used medical equipment in Ethiopia
Strong representational and interpersonal skills
Excellent written and verbal English; proficiency in Amharic
Ability to understand and articulate issues reported by facilities.
Proficiency in common computer packages (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel) relevant to
the work
Ability to work well under pressure
Good verbal and written communication skills
Relevant technical knowledge.
Problem-solving skills.
Efficiency and organization
Team working skills
